Florence Nightingale Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, penned on recto and verso, 4.25" x 7", Scutari, Turkey, January 21, 1856. Here, Nightingale writes to an unidentified correspondent concerning the donation of books to the hospital. In part: " best thanks for the books you have so kindly sent. They are exactly the kind of books which will be acceptable to the sick officers. I beg also to thank you for including the Longfellow poem. With respect to your kind proposal of sending other books, in case we should not have peace... the kind of books which I would suggest as most desirable would be light Biography & Travels - Miscellanies containing such subjects are much valued here." Faintly toned with several mild creases. Accompanied by a 3.25" x 4.5" hand-tinted photo of Nightingale in Turkey.

Claiming to take her direction from God, Florence Nightingale embarked upon a selfless and potentially deadly crusade to treat and care for the sick and dying. In 1854, she followed this ambition to Scutari, Turkey, where, along with 30-some volunteer nurses, she undertook the daunting task of nursing thousands of wounded and infected British troops to health during the Crimean War. The hospital was dramatically overcrowded and terribly unhealthy. Sewers were backed up, and the lack of proper ventilation caused those suffering from typhus, cholera, typhoid, and dysentery far greater danger than their actual ailments. Under Nightingale's direction, a Sanitary Commission was brought in to address the sanitation and ventilation concerns, dramatically lowering the death rate at the hospital. Nightingale was hailed a hero and given the name "The Lady with the Lamp" for her never-ending dedication to caring for her charges, whatever the time of day or night.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
