First Lady Julia D. Grant Signed Cabinet Card. 4.25" x 6.5". The wife of President Ulysses S. Grant is seen in a sepia toned vignetted chest up portrait, wearing a dark dress and looking slightly to her left. She has signed her name in black ink below her likeness, near the lower edge of the image. The photo is affixed to a W. Kurtz mount with an elaborate backstamp.

This cabinet card was once the property of Admiral George Dewey (1837-1917), the only man to hold the rank of Admiral of the Navy. Dewey graduated from the Naval Academy in 1858 and served in the navy during the Civil War, where he was involved in the attack on New Orleans and the Battles of Port Hudson and Fort Fisher, and during the Spanish-American War, where, during the Battle of Manila Bay, he destroyed or captured the entire Spanish Pacific fleet and the shore batteries of Manila with only one American killed. A pen notation on the verso, written in blue ink in the upper half, reads, "From the Estate of Admiral Deweys Effects . . . Dec 27 1933." Near the lower left corner is a second notation which reads, "Given to Admiral Dewey by Julia Grant wife of Gen. Grant."

Condition: The image shows very minor damage to the upper corners; upper corners of the mount are rubbed.
