Ezra Pound Letter Archive. This lot contains thirteen letters of Ezra Pound, American Poet and critic, to Roger Ian Sharrock, also a writer. The letters were written over a period of time covering August, 1954 to May, 1957. These interesting letters were all written when Pound was committed to St. Elizabeth Mental Hospital, Washington D.C. Many believe Pound was held because of various political reasons, rather than psychiatric ones. He was eventually released, however, still legally considered insane but not a danger to others. Pound was the center of the modernist movement, who along with T.S. Eliot were major figures in 20th century poetry. This lot features three typed letters signed with initials and 10 typed letters with holographic corrections and annotations in Pound's hand. All letters come with their envelopes or integral address portions save for two.

A list of the letters follows: August 7th, 1954, typed letter, 1 page.
May 30, 1955, typed letter, 1 page with envelope.
July 10, 1955, typed letter, oblong, 2 pages with envelope.
    August 20, 1955, typed letter, 2 4to pages and 1 8vo page oblong, 3 pages with envelope.
August 22, 1955, typed letter, 2 pages with integral address leaf.
September 9, 1955, typed letter, 1 page with envelope.
November 1, 1955, typed letter, oblong, 1 page with envelope.
January 9, 1956, typed letter, 1-1/3 pages with envelope.
January 22, 1956, typed letter, 2 pages with integral address leaf.
August 26, 1956, typed letter, oblong, 1 page with envelope.
February 19, 1957, typed letter signed, 1 page.
April 24, 1957, typed letter signed, 2 pages with integral address leaf.
May 19, 1957, typed letter signed, 1 page with envelope.

To highlight some of the content, the letter from May 19, 1957, reads, "Seems Louis X of France has had a bad press. Has anyone looked into this or asked WHY?? Crusade in Anselm's time a particularly foul one. AND I didn't take adequate notes as was gunning for development toward Maggie Carter. Hocking of Normandy. Metetz en gatje. Yrs. What does the jewish Encyclopedia say about Niebuhr or either of 'em?" The letters are full of esoteric and cryptic language; fascinating reads. Pound, one of the most influential and profound poets of the 20th century, left this written legacy of his time spent locked away from society.

The letters are all in very fine condition; usual folds are present; all are preserved along with their original envelopes and address leaves. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
