Eyewitness Account of the Battle of Waterloo. Fair copy. Six pages including integral blank, penned on recto and verso, 7" x 9", "Waterloo 3 Leagues in front of Brussels, 19th June 1815." Signed "C. Campbell," the letter relates events on the field of battle at Waterloo, where Napoleon Bonaparte fell to the combined forces of an Anglo-Allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington and a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. It was the culminating battle of the Waterloo Campaign and Napoleon's last. The defeat at Waterloo put an end to Napoleon's rule as Emperor of the French and marked the end of his Hundred Days' return from exile.

In part: "We have gained a great and most glorious victory yesterday Ev.g., and totally defeated Bonaparte's Army and taken all his Cannon Baggage, &c &c. The Duke has done all this, it was the severest and most bloody Action ever fought and the British Infantry has surpassed any thing, ever before known. The Action begun about Eleven o'clock and lasted till nearly the same hour at night . . . the Rear in our Cavalry made several brilliant Charges, the Household Brigade has particularly distinguished themselves. . . . The Duke was all day every where in the thickest of it. . . . I have never seen so many killed and wounded." Campbell goes on to tell of the terrible losses suffered by his comrades in arms. The first six pages were written in a separate hand from the final two pages. All pages have the same watermark ("G. PIKE 1814"). Faint toning; small chip on left edge of integral blank wrapper.
