Hemingway Insurance Claim for His Boat Pilar

Ernest Hemingway Insurance Claim Written in His Hand and Signed. One page, 8.5" x 11", Havana, September 12, 1957. Hemingway and his wife, Martha, purchased a home in Havana in 1940 and were residents of that city for twenty years. An avid outdoorsman, he would fish extensively in the waters around the island on his boat, Pilar. On one such excursion, in 1957, an accident occurred aboard the ship and he was in need of repairs. Back on land, Hemingway filed a "Marine Note of Protest," claim number 57-5563, with the marine insurance firm Carpinter & Baker in which he includes a lengthy description of the accident, in part:

"...on the 13th day of August 1957...aboard the Gasoline Cruiser 'Pilar' in the capacity of Owner & Master...while approximately 5 miles east of Havana off the north coast of Cuba trolling to the westward...with a Force 5 east wind and heavy following sea a marlin was hooked and my mate Gregorio Fuentes, steering with top side controls on the flying bridge was thrown against the throttle while reversing the motor causing the motor to go full throttle while reversing; breaking a piston and severely scoring the cylinder."

Hemingway placed his signature and date at the lower edge. Damage to the upper left corner where several small staple holes are present. Very light staining near upper left and small spots of foxing along the left edge. With a copy of the bill for repairs to "Yacht 'Pilar,'" dated November 15, 1957, totaling $550.85.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
