    Description

    New York Stock Exchange founder

Ephraim Hart Document Signed "Ephraim Hart." Four integral pages written on three pages and docketed on page four, 9.75" x 15.5", New York, New York, July 7, 1807. The document is an indenture for a parcel of land sold by Ephraim Hart, broker, and his wife Frances Noah Hart to James C. Roosevelt.

Ephraim Hart (1747-1825), who's original surname was Hirz, was born in the Franconian city of Fürth in southern Germany. Hart changed his name after arriving in North America. He established himself as a merchant in Philadelphia in the 1780s where he was a member of the Congregation Mikveh Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in the city. In 1783 Hart married Frances Noah. He moved to New York and became an elector of Congregation Shearith Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. In New York Hart started a commission and brokerage business and, by 1792, was one of the most successful businessmen in the city. Hart was one of twenty-four stock brokers who signed an agreement under a buttonwood tree at 68 Wall Street that established the New York Stock & Exchange Board, now called the New York Stock Exchange. Scallop top folio, slight weakness at the folds with instances of separation thereat, and uniform light toning.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
