    Description

    Emile Zola Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral blank, 5.25" x 8", in French (untranslated), Paris, January 21, 1902. Emile Zola was born in Paris in 1840. After working as a clerk and a journalist, he began to write short stories and, later, novels. His sequence of 20 books, called Les Rougon-Macquart, was described in the subtitle as "the natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire." He was convicted of criminal libel in 1898 for his exposure of the Alfred Dreyfus affair to the public, but escaped to England. He died just eight months after writing this letter. Folds. Tipped onto a mat at the upper edge with a portrait of the author to an overall size of 16.25" x 13".
