Elizabeth Cady Stanton Partial Autograph Letter (Unsigned). Two pages, 8" x 10.5", ca. November 3, 1870. Stanton's letter is written in pencil on the verso of a letter written by C. S. Carter. Only one year after founding the National Woman Suffrage Association, Elizabeth Stanton - abolitionist and suffragette - writes this to an unknown recipient on behalf of Carter. Stanton felt guilty because Carter had "taken so much trouble I shall feel under obligations to pay him something unless I give him more time. . . . It is evident that . . . [illegible] never informed him of my decision nor sent him my letter."

    C. S. Carter's Autograph Letter Signed (Chicago, November 3, 1870) was written in pen on letterhead reading, "American Literary Bureau." In the letter, Mr. Carter explains that he had cancelled speaking arrangements for Ms. Stanton because he "could get no information that you would fill them." This put Mr. Carter in a "muddle" that he was trying to work out, a muddle that roused Ms. Stanton's sympathy. Some repairs exist along the central horizontal fold. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.
