Description
Elbridge Gerry Military Appointment as Governor of Massachusetts. One page, 15" x 9.5", [Boston, Massachusetts]; May 1, 1811. Document appoints "Samuel Moody...Lieutenant of a Company in the Third Regiment of Infantry in the First Brigade, and Sixth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth." Signed, "E. Gerry." Countersigned by Benjamin Homans as Secretary of the Commonwealth. With paper seal at top left and docketing on verso.Elbridge Gerry remained active in the early stages of organizing the resistance in the American Revolutionary War. Elected to the Second Continental Congress, he signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Gerry was one of three men who attended the Constitutional Convention in 1787 who refused to sign the United States Constitution because it did not then include a Bill of Rights. After its ratification, he was elected to the United States Congress, where he was actively involved in the drafting and passage of the Bill of Rights. Gerry was a member of a diplomatic delegation to France that was involved in the XYZ Affair. He became a Democratic-Republican and later served as governor of Massachusetts (1810-1812) and Vice President of the United States (1813-1814) under James Madison. He is known best for being the namesake of gerrymandering, a process by which electoral districts are drawn with the aim of aiding the party in power.
Condition: Paper repair to integral fold on verso. Adhered to plastic sleeve due to tape remnants on verso. Lightly toned with minor areas of soiling.
