    Description

Edwin Stanton Document Signed with related documents. Three pages, 7.75" x 10", Washington, D.C., April 1, 1863. A true copy under the seal of the War Department, originally dated September 11, 1861 and signed by Stanton's predecessor, Simon Cameron, calling for the arrest of several Baltimore citizens with secessionist sympathies. The document directs General John A. Dix to "arrest, forthwith the following named persons, viz. T. Parkin Scott, S. Teachle Wallis, Henry M. Warfield, F. Key Howard, Thomas W. Ball, and Henry May and to keep them in close custody suffering no one to communicate with them and to convey them at once to Fortress Monroe...".

Together with a manuscript document, two integral pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Head Quarters of the Army, Washington, June 24, 1861; an official copy of a document issued by Winfield Scott authorizing the recipient to "seize at once and securely hold, the four members of the Baltimore Police Board; viz. Charles Howard, Wm. Getchell, J. W. Davis and C. W. Hinks, Esquires together with the chief of the Police, G. P. Kane." These documents were issued in the turbulent wake of the Baltimore Riots which occurred in April 1861. Both documents display the usual smoothed vertical fold creases but are in otherwise excellent condition. The documents are accompanied by a contemporary illustration of the Baltimore riot.
