Edward Teller (1908-2003) was a Hungarian born American theoretical physicist and one of the fathers of the hydrogen bomb. Teller, along with Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner, helped urge President Roosevelt to develop an atomic bomb program in the United States. He became one of Oppenheimer's first recruits at Los Alamos where he was a group leader in the Theoretical Physics Division in 1943. Teller was present at the detonation of the Gadget in July 1945 during the Trinity Test. He refused to lie on the ground with his back turned as ordered, choosing instead to risk watching the detonation with eye protection. He testified against Oppenheimer at his 1954 security clearance hearing. Teller was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003 by President George W. Bush.
