    Description

Edith Bolling Wilson Autograph Letters (3) Signed. Three letters, totaling 14 pages on White House letterhead, 4.25" x 5.5". The letters are dated October 13, 17, and [20], of 1919; all are addressed to Grant Squires, a New York attorney and confidante of President Wilson. In her October 13 letter, Mrs. Wilson thanks Squires on behalf of the President for a check he has sent. She notes that "the doctors are keeping him quiet." The next two letters are also written on behalf of the President, making apologies for not being able to locate a receipt that Squires is asking for, and adding that she does not want to upset the President because of her carelessness in misplacing the receipt. President Wilson had suffered a severe stroke on October 2, 1919 and was completely incapacitated; a fact Mrs. Wilson kept hidden from even the President's inner circle. The last letter is undated, but was written around October 20. The transmittal envelope has no address or postal stamps, suggesting that it was hand delivered to Squires who likely showed up at the White House to investigate why he was not getting a response directly from the President. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: All three letters are in near fine condition, and include the original transmittal envelopes.
