    Early 19th Century Statesmen Group of Seventeen Letters, all dated between 1828 and 1858 and written to Supreme Court Associate Justice John McLean covering a wide range of topics. The letter writers include congressmen, governors, diplomats, officers, judges, editors, and vice presidents. All are very good to fine.

    Authors include Edward Livingston, Francis Samuel Muhlenberg, William C. Rives, Stephen[?] Van Rensselaer, Elisha Whittlesey, Jacob Burnet, Lewis Cass, Thomas Corwin, Albert Gallatin, Horace Greeley, John C. Calhoun, Joseph Vance, Samuel McKean, and Justice McLean's wife, Rebecca Edwards McLean. In one letter by Judge Ross Wilkins dated August 1854, Wilkins reports on attending a séance. In part: "My mind was perplexed a good deal about the table-moving & spirit communication of the preceeding evening. I cannot question the facts. But I am more assured that it is all the work of the Evil One." Also included is an 1857 presidential invitation for "Justice McLean & Lady's company at dinner". This archive is worthy of further research.
