    Description

"You are a thorobred [sic], and, merely incidentally, I love the hell out of you."

Dwight D. Eisenhower Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages (verso only on ruled paper), 8" x 10.5", [Algiers], January 26, [1943]. Writing home to his wife of nearly twenty-seven years, Mamie, while overseas during the Second World War, Gen. Eisenhower, not yet named Supreme Allied Commander, provides an intimate look at his relationship with the future First Lady, in part: "By the time this reaches you the news will be out that we've had a convocation of high rank here - so you will know that I've had only a matter of minutes (even less) to myself. But I do have time to tell you again that I'm prouder of you every time someone brings me news of the way you handle yourself - of the serene way that you (my mother too, God bless her) brush off the chance to indulge in cheap publicity. You are a thorobred [sic], and, merely incidentally, I love the hell out of you. Maybe even more than that, but if I were ever able in one letter to tell you exactly how much I love you there would be no reason for writing you again - because that's the only thing I ever seem to say." Smoothed folds, else fine.
