    Declaration Signer Josiah Bartlett Autograph Document Signed Three Times as Justice of the Peace. Single sheet, 7.25" x 11.5", January 1787. A legal document concerning the "Trial & Sentence of John Kimbal for Stealing." In part:

    "January first 1787 the fine not being paid the said Kimbal was whipped according to the written sentence and the cost & damages not being paid the said Frifields agrees to take him into service agreeable to the sentence and he is accordingly delivered into the Frifields custody to serve, agreeable to the sentence." Boldly signed three times, twice on the front and once on verso, "Josiah Bartlett".

    Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795) was a New Hampshire physician and lifelong public servant. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, chief justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court, and as governor of the state.

    Condition: Lightly toned along mail folds, weakness at horizontal and vertical folds has caused some separation at top and right edges. Small amount of ink smudging. Light paper clip stain at top margin on verso.
