Declaration Signer Benjamin Harrison Autograph Letter Signed. A little more than one page with integral address cover, 7.5" x 9"; Richmond, June 17, 1789. A letter to Etienne Dutilh, a merchant based in Philadelphia regarding plans to ship tobacco crop prices. He writes: "Mr. John Richard has delivered my your favor of the 25th May ultmo. We have consulted together & determined on shipping some good tobacco of the last crop & I have engaged [a] frigate for it on board of a ship expected in 3 or 4 weeks. I sold the warrants at 16 per the pound soon after I wrote you on the 7th of May expecting that they would rather fall below that price, than in higher, but I am mistaken they have risen since to 18 per the pound. I am very sorry for this mistake in my opinion, it is not often that I am out in my conjectures about our [illegible] securities..." He signs at the top of the next page, "Benj Harrison."With integral cover addressed in Harrison's hand, bearing "Richmond, June 17" stamp in black ink. Docketed in an unknown hand.
Condition: Small tear at integral margin. Paper loss on address cover where wax seal has been torn open. Worm hole affecting a single word at start of fifth line of letter, and going through to next page and seal. Rust paper clip stain, overall toning. Pencil annotation from previous collector citing place, date, and price of purchase.
