David Hume Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6.5" x 8.5", Paris; February 13, 1764. A letter from Hume to a Mr. White, a London bookseller, introducing him to a Mr. Prault, a Paris bookseller: "This will be delivered to you by Monr. Prault, one of the most celebrated Booksellers of Paris, both for the Largeness of his Dealings, and the Probity and Integrity of his Conduct. I thought it might be useful to both of you to be acquainted with each other, and therefore recommend him to you: And I doubt not, but in every things, which you can do to serve and oblige him, he will find you very ready & willing. In doing so, you will also confer a Favour on Sir / Your most obedient & most humble Servant David Hume."

David Hume (1711-1776), the Scottish philosopher, historian, and economist, lived in Paris from 1763 to 1766 when he served as a private secretary to Lord Hertford, British ambassador to France. While there, he became secretary to the British Embassy and subsequently its Chargè d' Affaires, as well as a popular figure in French salons. After returning from Paris, he lived in London from 1767 to 1769, when he moved to Edinburgh, where he lived to the end of his life.

Hume's letter was addressed to a Mr. White, "Bookseller" in London. This may have been Benjamin White (1725-1794), a Fleet Street bookseller and publisher, who was the brother of the naturalist Gilbert White (1720-1793).

Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds with mended separations on the verso; no loss of text. Ink smear occurring at greeting, and two small bits of paper loss occurring at tears at top and right margin. Mounting remnants on verso. Uneven toning and light soiling.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
