Appointment of Thomas "Peg Leg" William Ward signed by the first Republic president and the first state governor

David G. Burnet and J. Pinckney Henderson Signed Appointment. Partially printed DS, one page folio (15.5" x 12.5"), Austin, December 22, 1846; appointing Thomas William Ward as General Commissioner of the General Land Office. J. Pinckney Henderson signs as first Governor of Texas after joining the State of the Union, and Burnet signs as Secretary of State. Burnet had been the first ad interim President of the Republic of Texas upon gaining independence from Mexico. With ornate lettering at top, and a filing note on verso resulting in some bleed-through well away from both signatures, else fine.

Col. Thomas William (Peg Leg) Ward had fought at the siege of Bexar in December 1835, during which he lost his leg to a cannonball. He returned to New Orleans to be fitted with a peg leg. Returning to Texas in the spring of 1836, Ward was commissioned as a Colonel by Pres. David G. Burnet and served under Gen. Thomas J. Rusk. He served as Commissioner of the General Land Office of Texas from 1841-1848, in a Samuel Houston letter to Ward also offered in this auction, Houston lauds Ward's honesty, and commends his work stating that he "saved her [Texas] millions of acres."
