Daniel Drake Henrie Autograph Letter Signed to "The Hon. J. M. McCalla". Two pages, 8" x 10", Nashville, May 19, 1848. Shortly after the Mexican War, Drake writes of "the arrival of our very distinguished friends Genls. Pillow, and Shields" who had met a very warm reception in a visit to Nashville. Drake continued, "Genl. Pillow is in fine health and we deem him one of the star of America, tis true his light has been somewhat dim in the distant horizon of just fame, but the Scot-cloud of persecution is fast disappearing and he shines with a more brilliant cast than ever, and we look anxiously for the day not far distant when he shall have his foot upon the necks of his enemies". During the Mexican War, General Gideon Pillow clashed with Gen. Winfield Scott, commander of the American forces in the Mexican War. Pillow wrote a letter, anonymously crediting himself with two victories that actually belonged to Gen. Scott. When Scott learned what Pillow had done, he had him arrested. Thanks to President Polk, Pillow escaped punishment and left the army in July 1848, after this letter was written. (Later during the Civil War, he served as a Confederate general.) James Shields served as a brigadier general under Zachary Taylor. During the Mexican War, Drake, a former Texas Ranger, narrowly escaped capture by the Mexicans. Some separation along folds; .5" x .25" missing on the last page, though no text is missing. Minor ink bleed-through. Very good condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
