    Description

Confederate Wayside Hospital Register and Financial Records from the Greenville, South Carolina, Ladies Aid Association. The hospital register has hard covers and measures 6.5" x 15". After some initial entries from 1858-1859, the journal reads, "Wayside Hospital opened by the Ladies of Greenville at the old Academy on 20th Aug. 1862." Then, "At a meeting of the Greenville Ladies' Aid Association, held on Monday, Aug. 25, 1862, the Directresses of the Association were directed to take charge of the Wayside Hospital which some of them had just opened, & to conduct it; raising such special contributions for the purpose as they may find practicable." The register has columns containing names, military units, "Disease" (includes wounds), and "Remarks" for approximately 3,000 Confederate soldiers who passed through Wayside Hospital. Under the column "Diseases" are written diseases and wounds such as diarrhea, fever, rheumatism, measles, and various wounds (to the foot, head, hand, breast, thigh, etc.). Beginning on page 193 are lists of people who gave contributions to the hospital, along with the amounts they gave. Also listed are other gifts, such as "stage fare for soldier to Henderson." The register also lists the Ladies Aid Association's bye laws and life members. All pages are still bound, though some tenuously. Some minor stains and soiling throughout.

The second register (hard covers measuring 8.5" x 11") lists the Ladies Aid Association members, contributions, financial statements, and more for the years 1862-1865. The end of the register contains information for the Ladies Memorial Association for 1866. The front cover has detached, along with a few pages. Minor foxing to the paper.
