    More Information:

John Breckinridge Castleman (1841-1918) was born in his family's home "Castleton" in Fayette County, Kentucky.  He attended Transylvania University until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he joined the Confederate forces under John Hunt Morgan.  Castleman served as captain of Company D of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry.  By the end of the Civil War, he had attained the rank of Major.  In 1864 he led guerilla effort to burn Union supply boats in St. Louis, Missouri, and was arrested and subsequently convicted of spying with sentence of death.  Castleman's execution was stayed by President Abraham Lincoln and he was exiled from the U.S. but later pardoned by President Andrew Johnson.  After returning to the U.S. in 1866, Castleman entered the insurance business and served for twenty years as president of the Board of Park Commissioners in Louisville.  In recognition of his service, an equestrian statue of him was erected near Cherokee Park, Kentucky, several years before his death. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, Castleman was commissioned a Brigadier-General, but saw no action.
