    Description

Confederate General William Mahone Autograph Letter Signed, four pages, 5" x 8", n.p., February 8, 1861, to Governor John Letcher, probably Richmond, Virginia. This remarkable pre-war letter is a recommendation penned by a future Confederate general on behalf of future Union general's career. The subject of the missive is none other than George H. Thomas, an aristocratic Virginian who would surprisingly eschew the Confederate cause and prove himself one of the Union Army's most valuable generals. Here Mahone suggests that U.S. Army Major Thomas, "the essence of modesty", be offered a post as ordnance officer with Virginia troops. Of Thomas, Mahone erroneously predicts that, "...If our state retires from the Union I am satisfied that he will withdraw formally from the army and devote himself to our cause, whatever that may be..." This letter is a great example of history that wasn't. Within three months the two friends would technically be enemies. A few minimal water stains, else fine condition.
