Description

Confederate General States Rights Gist Endorsement Signed "S.R. Gist." Excised from a larger document to an overall size of 3" x 3.25", General Gist has placed his signature from the headquarters of the Eastern Division on June 25, 1862, just nine days after successfully defending James Island during an attempt by Federal forces to capture Charleston at the Battle of Secessionville. Moderately stained. Areas of paper loss along the left edge and through the middle. Mounted to a backing sheet.

When South Carolina seceded from the Union, States Rights Gist (1831-1864) served as state adjutant and inspector general, acquiring weaponry and mobilizing manpower throughout the state. In early 1861, he was assigned to the Confederate Army of the Potomac as an aide to another South Carolina general, Brig. Gen. Barnard Bee, at the First Battle of Manassas (July 21, 1861). Gist was wounded in this action, but he subsequently resumed his duties as adjutant-general, organizing South Carolina troops for the war. Gist was shot again, this time fatally, while leading his brigade in a charge against Federal fortifications at the Battle of Franklin in November 1864.
