Confederate General Roger W. Hanson: Group of Three Cartes de Visite, One of which is Signed. The first, affixed to a 2.5" x 4" Bendann Brothers, Baltimore mount, features "Old Flintlock" in a three-quarter length portrait in the uniform of a Confederate general, his right hand placed in the breast of his coat. He has placed his signature to the lower edge of the mount, "RW Hanson Col 2nd Ky Reg / C.S.A." A pencil inscription on the verso reads, in part, "Miss Jill Hanson / Lexington K / 'Grand niece of Gl Hanson." Light spotting along the right edge of the image. Very minor bending to the lower right corner of the mount. The second cdv, measuring 2.5" x 3.75", shows a similar image to the first with a Monumental Photograph Company, Baltimore backstamp on the verso. Clipped corners; a small spot of staining touches the upper right corner of the image. The final image, measuring 2.5" x 4", features a full length studio portrait of Hanson's wife, Virginia. Affixed to a Bendann Brothers mount. Overall toning with areas of discoloration touching the image.

Hanson (1827-1863) commanded the "orphaned" 2nd Kentucky Regiment, so named because of the Union's control over their home city of Lexington, Kentucky. At the surrender of Fort Donelson, the regiment was taken prisoner and Hanson was exchanged seven months later. The regiment reenlisted and Hanson was made a brigadier general and placed in command of the Orphan Brigade. At the Battle of Murfreesboro, his first as a general, Hanson was wounded and died two days later.
