Confederate General Order No. 17 Fair Copy. One ruled page, 7.75" x 9.75", "Hd. Qrs. Dept Northern Virginia," January 30, 1862, regarding the transfer of General P. G. T. Beauregard. In part: "In obedience to orders received from the Secretary of War assigning him to an important position in another department, General Beauregard is relived from the duties of his present command. In losing the aid of the distinguished Soldier, the Commanding General cannot withhold the expression of his Sense of the eminent Services by which he has achieved so much for our country. . . . By command of Gen'l Johnston."

During the winter of 1861-1862, General Beauregard argued strongly for an invasion of the border state of Maryland. When his suggestion was not heeded, he issued public statements to the Confederate press that angered President Jeff Davis. In an attempt to move the general away from Virginia, Davis assigned him as second-in-command of General Albert Sidney Johnston's Army of the Mississippi. This fair copy is very clean with very minor foxing.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
