    Description

Confederate General Leonidas Polk Twice Signed Carte de Visite. Measuring 2.5" x 4.25", "The Fighting Bishop" is seen in this waist up portrait in the uniform of a Confederate general, arms folded over this chest, looking slightly off to his right. The general has signed "L. Polk. / Lieut Genl" below the image. An additional signature appears on the verso with the inscription: "To my early friend Dr. F.J. Haywood [signed] L. Polk." Left edge of the image is discolored; several small, dark spots are also seen. Discoloration of the lower edge of the mount does not affect the signature. Tape remnant along the upper edge; lower corners are clipped. Uneven toning and spots of discoloration on the verso does not affect the inscription, which is bold.

Episcopal Bishop Gen. Leonidas Polk (1806-1864) was scouting enemy positions with his staff when he was disemboweled by a Federal artillery shell at Pine Mountain near Marietta, Georgia.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
