    Description

Confederate General John Pegram Clipped Signature and Carte de Visite. Excised from a larger document, Pegram's signature is found on a 3" x 1.75" strip of paper which reads, "[signed] Jno. Pegram / Brig Gen'l." Pegram is seen in full uniform, leaning upon a pillar with his right arm, his hat in his right hand, in a 2.25" x 3.75" CDV. On the verso, written in pencil in an unknown hand, is "Col. Pegram C.S.A." Both are in generally fine condition.

Pegram (1832-1865) was a West Point graduate who entered Confederate service as a Lt. Colonel. He was captured at Rich Mountain, making him the first former U.S. army officer to be captured while in Confederate service. He was paroled in exchange for a Union officer and later fought at Murfreesboro and Chickamauga. He was killed in action at Hatcher's Run on February 6, 1865.
