Confederate General John D. Imboden War-Date Autograph Letter Denying Depredations! Autograph Letter Signed (twice: "J.D. Imboden" and with initials"), as Brigadier General, 2 pages, recto and verso, 7.5" by 10", H.Q. Valley District, August 27, 1863. To Governor John Letcher of Virginia. The spine of the integral leaf has been strengthened - and the condition is fine. With a typed transcription. Here Imboden, a schoolteacher and lawyer before he entered the Confederate service as a gunner, defends the men under his command. He denies that soldiers with Major Gilmore - an unusually active and undisciplined man, as it happens - were guilty of plundering and burning towns. "...The fact is this, that the whole lower valley, and all along the Blue Ridge the country is filled with deserters from the army, and these are the scoundrels who commit these outrages, and to avoid arrest claim to belong to the nearest command, and in this case Major Gilmore happening to be on duty in that part of the country, every villain who has deserted his colors, will pass himself as one of Gilmore's men, whenever questioned. The Major has informed me of his purpose to lynch some of these fellows, a proceeding in which I will sustain himself, as I believe it to be the only means of breaking up the rascality." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
