    Description

    Confederate General George W. Gordon Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 5.75" x 9.25"; Camp Maury; December 18, 1861. A letter to his wife written in pencil sending news of life in the regiment. In part: "... there is nothing very new here - a few cases of sickness - we organized the Regiment today & I was defeated for Lieut. Col by a Mr. Sewall. Politics the cause I think. Tis all right I suppose, but my friends are & were quite indignant at my defeat..." Signed, "G.W. Gordon." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope addressed in his hand to "Mrs. Geo. W. Gordon."

    Condition: Usual mail folds and stray toning. Envelope has been sliced open at top, resulting in bits of paper loss on back; lightly soiled. Together with a steel engraving of Gordon.
