Confederate General Eppa Hunton Autograph Letter Signed and Addressed to "Jeff. Davis Presdnt. C. States." Two and one-half bifolium pages, 5.25" x 8", n.p., June 9, 1862. In this letter, Hunton, a Confederate general from Virginia, recommends Colonel Charles B. Tebbs of Virginia, a veteran of the battles of Bull Run and Ball's Bluff, for a position in "some one of the departments of the Confederate States Govt." Age toned paper with smoothed folds and some staining. The letter reads in part:

"Upon the occurrence of the 'Jno. Brown Raid' Col. Tebbs raised a fine volunteer company. 'The Loudoun Guard' for the protection of the border and soon brought it to a high standard of efficiency. The company (still in the service) with Col. Tebbs as its Capt was amongst the first under orders and under arms when Va. seceded and the first company ordered to the defence of Alexandria. Col. Tebbs remained at the head of his company till June when he was appointed a Lieut Col and assigned to the 8 Va Regt. He was with this Regt. on the hotly contested fields of Manassas and Leesburg and on both occasions bore himself with great gallantry. . . . Col Tebbs from a very early period was a warm advocate of Southern rights and has ever been willing to fight for Southern Independence. . . . [Signed] Eppa Hunton / Col. 8 Va. Regt."

Charles B. Tebbs served in the 17th Virginia Infantry before transferring to the 8th Virginia Infantry. Following Hunton's recommendation, Tebbs served in various offices. Hunton, who had served as a secessionist delegate to the Virginia Secession Convention, also served in the 8th Virginia.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
