    Description

Confederate General Daniel H. Hill Autograph Letter Signed "D.H. Hill." Two pages, 7.75" x 6.25", Goldsboro [North Carolina], March 22, 1863. Due to conflicts with Gen. Robert E. Lee, Hill was sent to his home state of North Carolina to recruit men. Writing to Gen. James Longstreet, who was at Petersburg, Hill updates him on his plans, in part: "I tried to telegraph you the enclosed slip, but learn that the line has been down for two days. I will move Kemper to Kinston tomorrow. Send Daniels except his Picket Regt to Blount Mill on Tuesday or Wednesday to appear to threaten Newbern & also to be in supporting distance of Greenville. From that position, he can prevent a land march from Newbern to Washington & compel reinforcements to go around by water . . . I will not leave here now till Tuesday, unless I have certain orders from you. . . . It is very alarming to find that the telegraph line & the Rail-Road are in such miserable condition. Is it not hazardous to send too many troops away? If the Yankees find that you have no force at Petersburg, they may strike for that point. . . . I need Yankee money here." Smoothed folds.
