    Description

"Washington [North Carolina] is more strongly fortified than I had supposed & cannot be taken without great loss of life"

Confederate General Daniel H. Hill Autograph Letter Signed "D. H. Hill / Maj. Genl." Two pages (one sheet), 8" x 10", Greenville, North Carolina, March 26, 1863. This letter, which is likely written to General James Longstreet, was written just four days before the Battle of Washington [North Carolina] began. The battle was part of Gen. Longstreet's operations near the North Carolina coasts. Gen. Hill led a force to New Berne and Washington to challenge Federal garrisons. In this letter, Hill apprises Longstreet of his position near Washington (twenty-two miles southeast of Greenville) and his prospects of and plans for taking the town, which was "strongly fortified." With smoothed folds; bold text and signature. The letter reads in part:

"I came over here forty-five miles through a rain-storm on Tuesday. Wednesday went within two miles of Washington on a reconnaissance & returned today. I fully appreciate the importance of an early move, but we cannot overcome nature & have to submit to God's will. Artillery cannot be got over the flat beyond the Bridge here, as the river is very high. . . . All the swamps are flooded with water. I cannot possibly move till Monday. . . . Washington is more strongly fortified than I had supposed & cannot be taken without great loss of life. I will first try to dislodge their gunboats & cut off retreat by water. They can then be starved out in a few days. I think that we can control the river below the town & prevent reinforcements and supplies from getting in. failing in that, an attack would be sheer folly."
