    Description

Confederate Colonel General James Johnston Pettigrew Endorsement Signed "J. Johnston Pettigrew" as commander of the 1st Regiment of Riles (Orr's Rifles). The endorsement consists of seven lines below a one-page letter dated February 4, 1861, from signed by Lt. Col. John L. Branch requesting a leave of absence. In the endorsement, Pettigrew, on Morris Island in Charleston Harbor, approved the leave. Pettigrew, a North Carolina native, was killed only days after the Battle of Gettysburg as his brigade prepared to cross the Potomac River in retreat from the battle. Smoothed folds. Light soiling.
