Colonel Sir Percy Wyndham Signed Brady Carte de Visite. Wet plate albumen on a Mathew Brady mount, 2.4" x 4", signed, "P. Wyndham Col." on the front mount. With backmark, "Brady's National Photographic Galleries... New York. No 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington D.C." A previous collector has noted in pencil on the verso, "Came from an album of 1st Penna. Cav. officers. Wyndham was their brigade commander in 1862-3." A few light abrasions and pinholes on the albumen, not going through to the mount. Ink of the signature has blossomed, with uneven toning on the verso. Wyndham was an English soldier and adventurer who served in the Union Army. He was captured by the Confederates on June 6, 1862; and was released during a prisoner exchange a few weeks later. He commanded the 1st New Jersey Cavalry at the Battle of the Throughfare Gap in August 1862; and was wounded at the Battle of Brandy Station the following year.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
