    Collection of Civil War Soldiers' Letters Comprises 32 ALsS, varying in length from 1p to 4p, 5" x 8" to 8" x 12", 1861-1864. A few letters are incomplete, five are on patriotic letterheads; ten original envelopes. The soldiers mainly talk about family matters, everyday life, personal feelings, and military activities. Quotes from some of the letters, spelling uncorrected: "Look at Comodore Burnside's expedition 20 vessels in the bottom of the Atlantic ocean all owing to incompetance"; "You wanted to know where I went to that night I was taken prisoner...I never knew before how a fellow feels after he surrenders but I felt ashamed enough. They took us to Gen Winder's Head Quarters and he tried to pump me concerning our forces Where Pope was and where Seigel was and many other things all I told him was he would find them soon enough...the General said he thought I was a slippery character and he had better hand cuff & shackle me for fear I would escape but I lied to him like a preacher and he finely let me lay down on the grass"; "Got our new gons last Week and tha are A Splendid Gon tha ar the US trean Rifel i think i could knock A secesh three or Four hundred yards easy"; "i dont think this war will close within three years as long as the north will take the stand she dare there will never be peace but if the north would bee all of the same mind it would not last long but the South knows that the north is divided and it incarages them and discarages our soldiers"; "General George B. McClelland sente in an order yesterday. Afternoon At 3 oclock to the rebbels to surrender. they refused to do so."; "there is lots of our fellow up at White Oak Swamp laying around that never was nor Ever will be Burried nothing Will mark thier spot but bleaching Bones allready the Silent vultures darken around thier prey We are often slow to think poor fellow you have about 4 feet of your Bounty land, and an honorable discharge then Pour Scotts requiem o'er the dead, Soldier rest thy warfares o'er Sleep the Sleep that knows not Braking Dream of battle fields no more days of danger nights of waking & so forth"; "We will go do all that god and our good arms will aid us on to do, we are all Tobacoless penniless Stampless & Less Everything but I dont want any thing I feel Just as content with nothing as I use to with plenty"; "I have Taned up till i am all most as black as a nehro I am almost a fraid be out a lone for fear that some one will clame me for a contriband"; "To day I was put in charge Camp Convalescent at this hospital and have four Surgeons under me this is considered quite a promotion. There is only one Surgeon higher than me and there are from 20 to 24 of us in all". Also includes five letters of ladies to various correspondents, mostly soldiers. Condition varies with some soiling and browning, but the letters are mostly in fine condition. In all, 47 items.
