Coahuila y Texas: Partly Printed Land Grant Signed by Robert Peebles awarding land to John G. Robinson. 2pp. 8.5" x 12", Villa de Austin, February 16, 1836. It reads that Robert Peebles has been commissioned by the government of the state to issue land grants to new colonists in the colonies of the empresarios Stephen F. Austin and Samuel M. Williams. The document is completed in manuscript, and provides detail regarding the location and size of the grant as surveyed by "Horacio Chriesman". Usual folds, with a few small separations and tiny areas of paper loss thereat. On page 2 is a holograph receipt for $35.00 "being the government dues on the within deed," signed by Reddin Andrews at Lagrange, Fayett[e] County, May 29, 1838.

During the state legislature session in Monclova (the capital of Coahuila y Tejas) held in the early part of 1835, Francis White Johnson, Peebles, and Samuel May Williams were named empresarios for 400 leagues of land. The land was to be granted to settlers in return for a year of military service in a new company of Texas militia that was to provide protection against the Indians. The militia was never organized, and the partners distributed the land in ten-league parcels among Texas settlers. During the Consultation of November 1835 a decree was issued which ceased issuance of these land grants. Despite this decree, the land grant presented here, was issued only two weeks before the Declaration of Independence. After the Revolution, most of the grants of this empresario contract were voided, but apparently not this one, as attested by receipt for Robinson's dues paid in 1838. TSHA member donation. All proceeds, including Buyer's Premium will go to support TSHA.
