Clyde Barrow Signature On A 1928 One Dollar silver certificate together with the signatures of Dallas County Sheriff "R. A. "Smoot" Schmid", and his deputies "Ted Hinton" and "Bob Alcorn", three members of the six officer posse who killed Barrow together with Bonnie Parker in a hail of bullets on May 23, 1934 in Louisiana. Barrow (1909-34), American gangster and founder of the "Bonnie and Clyde" gang, with Bonnie Parker he terrorized the Southwest for four years, robbing banks and stores and gunning-down thirteen civilians and lawmen along the way. A third member of the gang, Henry Methvin, tired of his life on the run, betrayed the duo to Texas Ranger Frank Hamer and plans were made to trap the pair. On May 23, 1934 Hamer and his Rangers prepared an ambush at Gibland, Louisiana and as Barrow and Parker passed in their car, they were riddled in a hail of gunfire. Barrow signs simply in print on the verso: "By Clyde Barrow". Schmid, Hinton and Alcorn have affixed their signatures to the recto dated May 23, 1934. This particular silver certificate was presented by one of the three to another Dallas County deputy sheriff as a souvenir. The certificate then passed to his daughter who has enclosed a letter of provenance. Certificate bears the usual folds, light soiling, but is in otherwise near fine condition. A remarkable association piece.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
