Clara Barton Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 6.75"; Oxford, Massachusetts; August 28, 1910. A letter to Edward Peterson regarding the scarcity of her book, the History of the Red Cross. In part, "I can well understand that you cannot obtain a copy at your 'Bookshop' or any other 'shop' that I could point you to. Through the disagreement and breaking up of the publisher in N.Y. some ten or more years ago, the publication ceased, and so far as known, none have been issued since. I have not been able to obtain a copy until last year, when I fortunately got possession of a few... I am just now looking to the republication of the Book and to bringing it out again. Would you think it worth the while?... The present Red Cross has no history back of 1905. Very hastily but Truly yours, Clara Barton." With the original envelope addressed in her hand.

Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1882, and was its main director for 23 years. Conflict arose regarding Barton's management due to her tendency to take sole responsibility for matters and money, without going through the proper channels. Although an investigation into the organization was dropped, Barton resigned in 1904.

Condition: Light age toning; with mounting remnants and staining on verso of first page of the letter. Small trace stains throughout. Envelope has been neatly torn open along the right edge not affecting any text; also, light soiling and stains with loss of surface paper affecting several words.
