Civil War Civilian's Letter From Piedras Negras - Santiago (James) Chamberlain ALS "Santiago Chamberlain" in Spanish, 2 pages with attached blank integral sheet, 8.25" x 10", Piedras Negras, May 7, 1865. Writing to his friend Jesus Garza Jimenez, Chamberlain relays news he has heard about the "news of the war of the United States favoring the arms of the North." In part: "...the invincible Gen. Lee with his entire army has at the last had the necessity of surrendering to Gen. Grant, also there is rumor (that appears to have much reason to be true) that two men have assassinated our President Lincoln in a theatre in Washington, if it is true And[rew] Johnson of Tenn[essee] (Vice President) will take his place, a man that will not have the same noble dispositions as Lincoln..." Chamberlain goes on to speculate the disastrous results the fall of the South will have on the cotton industry. Minor dampstaining does not affect legibility; very good to near fine condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
