DescriptionChief Red Cloud: His Autograph with Incredible Provenance. On an 8 ½" x 11" sheet are both his "signature" and "X," as well as 1906-dated certification of authenticity from U.S. government interpreter F. C. Goings and Pine Ridge Indian Agent John Brennan. The letter states that the signature was accomplished by having the old chief hold the pen in his hand which was being guided. Apparently he never learned to sign his full name, so the "X" would be considered his autograph. Accompanying the autograph sheet is a terrific original 3.5" x 4.5" silver print photo of Red Cloud holding his pipe, wearing his Peace Medal, and apparently deep in contemplation with period ink inscription on verso: "Old Chief Red Cloud, Pine Ridge S.D. Sept. 1909."
Red Cloud ranks with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse among the most famous and important chiefs during the Plains Wars, and this in one of the finest Native American autograph items from that era which we have ever offered.
