Description

    Chester W. Nimitz Inscribed Photograph Twice Signed. An historic, black and white photograph, 12.75" x 10.75" (sight), taken aboard the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945, Nimitz, commander in chief of the United States Pacific Fleet, is seen (seated) signing the Instrument of Surrender which formally ended the Second World War. Below the photograph, Nimitz has written: "To Frank Leahy/A worthy horseshoe opponent - and an old friend and shipmate of long standing - Best wishes./C.W.Nimitz, Fleet Admiral USN." Nimitz has also signed a second time, "C.W. Nimitz/U. S. Representative," on the photograph itself. Matted and framed to an overall size of 19.25" x 17.25".

    This photograph once hung in the office of Francis William "Frank" Leahy (1908-1973), head football coach at Notre Dame University from 1941 until 1943 and again from 1946 until 1953. Leahy enlisted in the U. S. Navy as a lieutenant in 1943 and served in Pacific until 1946, when he was discharged and resumed his post at Notre Dame.
