Charles Thomson Broadside Signed "Cha Thomson secy." One printed page with integral blank, 8" x 12.75", New York, June 27, 1786. Charles Thomson (1729-1824) was an early supporter of the Patriot cause and served as the leader of Philadelphia's Sons of Liberty. With the formation of the Continental Congress, he became secretary of the Congress, a position he maintained during its existence.

As secretary, Thomson signed this broadside regarding retrials in the court of appeals. Congress here has resolved "that the judges of the court of appeals be, and hereby are authorized . . . to sustain appeals, and grant rehearings or new trials of the same, wherever justice and right may in their opinion require it." Judges may not, however, call for a new trial if it would "suspend the execution of the first sentence, if the party in whose favour it may have been, shall give satisfactory security for the payment of such costs and damages as the court . . . may think proper to award." In addition, judges would be paid $10 a day "during the time they shall attend the sitting of said courts, and including the time they shall be necessarily employed in travelling to and from the same."

A pencil notation on the verso of the integral page indicates that "Evans 20046 does not locate a copy."

Condition: The document is fragile with separation along the folds. Unevenly toned, especially along upper and right edges, with scattered foxing. Thomson's signature shows some ink blooming, but is still bright.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
