Charles Lallemand Orders Wood for the Construction of Warships in the U.S. Autograph Letter Signed "C Lallemand". Two pages in French, 8" x 10", New York August 15, 1825. In part: "London War Dept.... If it is the intention of your govt.. to build war ships in the U.S. Wood must be sent Immediately..." He also describes guns to be carried by corvettes. After Waterloo, Baron Charles Lallemand went with Napoleon to Rochfort where Napoleon surrendered. He tried to have himself exiled to Elba with Napoleon, however the British decided that a friendly prison in Malta was to be his home until he escaped after just two months. Arriving in Philadelphia in 1817, he immediately made plans and left with 120 men to set up a colony in Texas, Champ de Asile (Field of Asylum), as a resting place for displaced French officers in the U.S. He was not welcomed by the Mexican government. Mexican Governor Antonio Maria Martinez put up a fort at San Marcos and ran him back to New York, where the present letter was written. He returned to France in 1830. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.Shipping, Taxes, Terms and Bidding

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
