Charles Guiteau Autograph Note Signed. One page, 4" x 4.5". Written in pencil: "I am in the Tombs. Please come & see me at once. It is a terrible place, come at once & I will explain all the charge is giving a check for 21 for Board. It is the greatest outrage ever committed on a citizen of N.Y. Come at once, Yours Sincerely Chas Guiteau." A small piece of paper with the date, "Dec 18/74" is affixed above Guiteau's signature. Addressed to "Hon Wm Barres" on the verso. Written on a piece of lined paper that has been removed from a larger sheet.

On July 2, 1881, Charles Guiteau, an unsuccessful Chicago lawyer and itinerant preacher, stepped onto the platform of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad station and twice shot President James Garfield in the back. He was immediately arrested and taken to jail. Shortly before the election of 1880, Guiteau had become interested in politics and printed a tract promoting Garfield for president. After Garfield won the presidency, Guiteau considered himself mostly responsible for Garfield's win. As compensation for his efforts, he expected an appointment in a diplomatic position. After numerous rejections, he believed that God had commanded him to kill the president, whom he stalked until the July 2 assassination.

Condition: Soiling throughout, especially on verso. Adhesive staining where the date has been affixed. With flattened folds and creasing. "Charles J Guiteau" is written in ink in an unknown hand on verso.
