Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed "Charles Dickens". Two pages of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7", Tavistock House [London]; September 8, 1853. A short thank you letter addressed to Lord John Russell, in which Dickens also relates his upcoming travel plans. It reads, in full:

"My Dear Lord. Coming home from Boulogne for a couple of days, before going into Italy until Christmas, I went down to Pembroke Lodge to thank Lady John for her kind note, though I had some fear that you might both have left. The writer of the enclosed letter is my dearest and most valued friend; and I desired at the same time to place it in your hands myself, simply with that one remark. It being read to me when I arrived in town, I wished and offered to be the Bearer."

Accompanying the letter is an engraving of Dickens by J.C. Armytage. Dickens had just finished the final publication of the monthly series of Bleak House, and was preparing to set out on an Italian tour. Lord Russell was a friend to whom Dickens would dedicate A Tale of Two Cities to when published in 1859.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with toning at the edges. There are some spots of soiling throughout, along with wax remnants at corners. There are two small areas of paper loss at the top edge of the second page. Overall good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
