Charles Dickens Autograph Letter Signed While on his Farewell Readings Tour. One page, 4.5" x 7', in blue ink on "Gad's Hill Place/Higham by Rochester, Kent" letterhead, London, January 20, 1870, to a man named Russell at Dickens' home in Kent and reads in full:

"The enclosed letter was sent to me this evening, Russell, from the Postmaster at Rochester in mistake, and I opened it in mistake among other letters. Immediately re-post it on to you.

"As soon as you are completely rid of the workmen, have the horse shed in the meadow thoroughly cleaned out, and all the rubbish in it burnt. It was in a very bad state when I came away."

Dickens was on his final "farewell readings" tour, which would end in March, when he wrote this letter home. It would be one of the last letters he would ever write. Dickens died six months later. Toned around the edges and folded; very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
