Charles Darwin Autograph Letter Signed "C Darwin". Four pages of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7", Kent [England]; November 12, no year [1849]. A letter addressed to Thomas Salt, banker and financial advisor to the Darwin family, written on black trimmed mourning stationary. Mourning paper was used after the death of Darwin's father on November 13, 1848. In the letter, Darwin asks Salt to investigate potential investment opportunities, as he believed he would be repaid a large sum in the coming months. It reads, in full:

"I have heard from my Brother that Lord Powis will pay off the 20,000£ mortgage by next Lady Day (the money perhaps being ready before that day) & I should feel extremely obliged to you, if you would endeavor to procure me another mortgage to the amount. My Brother, also tells me that he will have to pay me 10,000£ in cash on that same day, & therefore if you could procure a mortgage up to 25,000 or even 30,000 I should be very glad. Two mortgages would of course be to [illegible] to me. Of the 20,000£, half is trust-worthy of Mrs. Darwin, the other half being my own. I look at absolute security of investment as more important than total of interest. I should be very much obliged if you would be so good as to bear this in mind. As one of the family I beg to thank you for the kind interest you have shown in our affairs & remain my dear sir, yours faithfully & obliged - C. Darwin. P.S. I should be glad if at the course of a month or two you would inform me whether you think it likely that you could find securities to above amount: otherwise I must look at [illegible] for some other investment." The signature that appears at the top of the first page, near the date, appears to be a period identification and not Darwin's signature.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with additional creasing. There is a small amount of chipping at the edges. A light stripe of toning at the upper half. Else good.
