DescriptionCharles Bell Autograph Letter Signed "Charles Bell." Two pages, 7.25" x 9", "Middlesex Hospital"; March 2, 1830. A testimonial, written by Bell, in praise of one of his pupils. It reads, in full:
"Certificate for Mr. Bartlett – Having determined to select my Dressers from those pupils who should submit to examination; - for the purpose of securing attention to my Patients, and also to reward diligence in my Pupils, I fixed on Mr. William Bartlett. I have now to certify that Mr. Bartlett has dressed my Patients in the Middlesex Hospital for four months, that by his case & diligence he has enabled me to dismiss many Patients cured in a time unnaturally short, and has highly satisfied me both by his professional dexterity and his Humane attention."
Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842) was a Scottish surgeon and professor. His work in the field of neurology led to the discovery of the differences between sensory and motor nerves and Bell's palsy is named after him as he was the first to draw the conclusion of the facial nerve's connection to the condition. Apart from his work as a surgeon, Bell lectured at Middlesex Hospital and was Professor of Surgery at Edinburgh University. William Bartlett (1808-1873) went on to practice medicine in Notting Hill and served for 33 years as a surgeon at the Kensington Dispensary.
Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light edge toning and soiling. Small separations and chipping at the fold edges. The corners are slightly worn and creased. A few pencil notations in an unknown hand at the top of the first page. Bold signature by Bell.
