William Still Autograph Letter Signed "Wm Still." One page, 5" x 8", "Anti Slavery Office," Philadelphia, November 15, 1854, to Dr. E. Harvey. In full: "last evening Prof. C. D. Cleveland lectured for our Library Company, much to our satisfaction & pleasure, and it was announced, on the conclusion of his Lecture that 'Dr. Harvey would Lecture next Tuesday evening,' on Geology. Is that compatible with your will in the matter? I hope so, though I confess that it was were our duty to have obtained your consent, for Tuesday eve, before announcing you, as we did. Indeed we could not think of any body else on whom we thought we could rely or could feel free to announce, hence I hope you will excuse us in the matter." Very small hole at the intersection of the folds, but not affecting the text. Small ink smudge at lower right corner. Still's signature is located on the verso of the letter. Else very fine. With original transmittal envelope.

William Still, the "Father of the Underground Railroad," was born a free man to ex-slaves in New Jersey in 1821. Moving to Philadelphia in 1844, he became a clerk at the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society and chairman of an abolitionist committee assisting runaway slaves. As a conductor on the Underground Railroad, he assisted 800 slaves in their escape to freedom, diligently keeping detailed records including short biographies, aliases, and their destinations. After the war, he published his diaries containing valuable information on the workings of the Railroad.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
