William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody: Shoshone Irrigation Company ALS and Archive. Group of items related to Cody's ambitious, but failed business enterprise, the Shoshone Irrigation Company. Includes: 1) partial 6" x 9.25" Autograph Letter Signed (missing the first page) on Plankinton House letterhead, Milwaukee, n.d., likely sent to George Beck, his project manager. "... still the unlucky President and we are in a tight place and when I beg you to keep me posted, am I not entitled to some consideration? If trouble comes to our company, the fault will have to fall on someone... These little daily working reports have bearing on the general business." (loss affecting two words). 2) 4-page ALS on "Office of S. Bloom" letterhead, Sheridan, Wyoming, August 20, 1896, written by a disgruntled employee, D. P. Flood, who has worked for three months, having been promised a salary of $100 monthly, but has received nothing. Cody has endorsed it in pencil on the concluding page: "Dear Beck-- What do you think had better be done with Flood. he should not be paid if he was drinking to excess. Cody". 3) through 8) Group of four letters and two telegrams related to company business. These include a dunning letter for $3000 from Millis & Company dated 1896, a 2-page ALS dated 1897 sent to Cody from an inventor of a excavating machine offering his services, a 4-page TLS from Elwood Mead (of Lake Mead fame) to Cody dated 1897 advising on sending an engineer and gardener to assist in the project detailing the associated costs, a 1-page letter to Cody from W. L. Rutledge dated 1896 seeking employment in the irrigation project, an 1897 telegram to Cody from the company Treasurer and an 1896 telegram from Cody to Beck seeking information. 9) through 12) four pieces of ephemera related to George Beck, two of a political nature.
